What TikTok's Evolution Means for the Future of E-Commerce Talent

TikTok is reportedly exploring peer-to-peer payments within direct messages, a feature that could allow users to send money to one another directly through TikTok Pay. Recipients could accept payments in-app, while senders could include messages, creating an experience like Venmo. While the feature is still in development, it represents another step in TikTok's increasingly aggressive push beyond social media. On the surface, this looks like a payments story.

           It’s an e-commerce story.

TikTok's long-term play appears to be creating a seamless ecosystem where users can discover products, engage with creators, communicate with friends, make purchases, and eventually transfer money without ever leaving the platform. The company has steadily expanded beyond short-form video through TikTok Shop, search, local discovery, gaming, travel booking features, and now potentially payments.

That strategy is already producing massive commerce results.

Analysts project the platform could surpass

$123 billion in GMV by year-end

, placing it among the largest social commerce ecosystems globally.

The United States has emerged as one of TikTok Shop's largest markets, accounting for $11.8 billion in spending during the first half of the year. The platform reportedly supports 1.35 million U.S.-based stores and 20 million influencers, creating a commerce engine driven as much by creators as traditional retailers.

Perhaps most importantly, TikTok continues to dominate product discovery. Research cited alongside the GMV data found that

62% of users use TikTok to discover new products

, reinforcing the platform's role as one of the most influential consumer discovery channels globally.

The proposed payments capability matters because it eliminates another layer of friction between discovery and purchase. The less often consumers need to leave the platform, the stronger TikTok's position becomes as an end-to-end commerce ecosystem.

Of course, rapid growth creates challenges. TikTok Shop continues to face scrutiny around product quality, marketplace trust, and the proliferation of questionable products, issues that virtually every scaled marketplace has had to navigate. As TikTok's commerce business grows, its ability to balance growth with trust will become increasingly important.

Whether peer-to-peer payments launch or not, the broader trend is clear: TikTok is no longer simply competing for attention. It's competing for transactions.

           With more than

$50 billion in merchandise sold in just six months

, the company is rapidly evolving from a social platform into one of the world's most influential commerce ecosystems.

           What this Means for Nike

For Nike talent teams, TikTok's growth is another reminder that the most valuable consumer-facing talent increasingly sits at the intersection of content, community, commerce, data, and technology.

TikTok's rise isn't just changing where consumers shop. It's changing the skills companies need to attract, develop, and retain to stay competitive in the next generation of commerce.

For Nike’s recruiting teams, the evolution of social platforms is showing a rise in demand in for the following skills:

             Digital & Commerce:

             Data & Analytics:

             Technology:

Payments, Digital Transaction Ecosystems, Digital Product Management, and Martech Platforms

Five years ago, social media expertise largely lived within marketing functions. Today, companies competing in digital commerce increasingly need leaders who understand how content influences conversion, how creators drive revenue, and how platforms shape purchasing behavior.

Win Now Through Innovation: The Talent Transforming Nike's Supply Chain Talent Across APLA

Asia Pacific is one of Nike's most dynamic and complex regions, with rapidly evolving consumer expectations, growing digital demand, and diverse marketplace models across nearly 20 countries. Consumers increasingly expect faster delivery, greater product availability, and seamless experiences whether they’re shopping in stores, on Nike.com, or through our Marketplace Partners. To meet these expectations, Nike is continuously innovating how product moves through our Supply Chain network and how quickly we can respond to changes in demand.

As part of this evolution, Nike is reaching a new frontier in supply chain transformation, powered by a combination of digital innovation, operational excellence, and extraordinary talent. From Nike Pacific’s (Australia and New Zealand) NDDC platform and distribution launch in 2025, to Korea's SPACE88 network transformation and Japan's groundbreaking FLIGHT distribution center this August, Nike is building a faster, smarter, and more connected supply chain designed to serve athletes and consumers with greater speed, precision, and agility.

The latest milestone came on August 19th 2026, when Nike Japan successfully completed the Outbound Go-Live of FLIGHT: Nike Japan's next-generation distribution and fulfillment center, designed to leverage advanced digital capabilities, automation, and modern logistics processes to improve speed, agility, and service across the marketplace. The facility will play a central role in powering wholesale, Nike Direct, and digital commerce demand, while supporting key HO26 launches across NSO, NVS, NSP, Nike.com, and ZOZO. By strengthening fulfillment capabilities, Nike can move product faster and create a better experience for athletes and consumers across Japan.

On day one alone, with COO Venky onsite, FLIGHT shipped more than 12,500 units, and while the technology and automation behind FLIGHT are impressive, the true story is the years of perseverance, problem-solving, and collaboration demonstrated by the J30 project team and cross-functional partners who brought one of Nike's most significant supply chain investments in the region to life.

That same spirit of innovation was on display in Korea on August 6-8, where Nike Korea teammates celebrated the successful Go-Live of Korea Network Strategy Phase 1: SPACE88. During his visit to the Icheon CSC, COO Venky met with teammates, leaders, and key partners to recognize this important milestone and see firsthand how strategy, technology, and execution are transforming Nike Korea's supply chain network. Beyond celebrating operational achievements, the visit reinforced an important truth: sustainable innovation happens when talented people are empowered to challenge conventions, solve complex problems, and continuously raise the bar.

Together, these milestones highlight more than a modernized Supply Chain. They demonstrate the strength of Nike's talent across Asia Pacific. Behind every system launch, warehouse transformation, and digital capability are teams of engineers, logistics experts, operators, planners, technologists, and business leaders working together to create the future of Sport. As Nike continues to accelerate its digital supply chain journey, it’s the passion, expertise, and dedication of Nike teammates and our partners that remain the ultimate competitive advantage, turning ambitious ideas into reality and helping Nike Win Now.

September 2026: State of the U.S. Economy & Labor Market

As summer 2026 draws to a close, the U.S. labor market remains defined by a single theme:

           stagnation rather than contraction

. Nike's latest Talent Landscape research found that nonfarm employment declined by approximately 23,000 jobs in July, while unemployment remained low at 4.1%. Job openings fell to 6.5 million, and employee mobility remains muted, with 3.05 million workers voluntarily leaving their jobs in June. Together, these indicators point to a labor market stuck in neutral.

This dynamic continues to support what many analysts now call

           "The Great Stay."

Workers remain cautious about changing employers amid economic uncertainty, geopolitical volatility, and persistent inflation concerns. Importantly, compensation dynamics have shifted. Total compensation increased 3.3% over the previous year, while inflation rose 3.4%, meaning wage growth is no longer outpacing cost-of-living increases. Yet highly skilled professionals continue to command premium opportunities, with reservation wages for college-educated workers climbing to more than $115,000. This suggests that while overall hiring demand has softened, competition for experienced professional talent remains intense.

Recent headlines reinforce this narrative. Reuters reported that weekly jobless claims declined to 206,000, indicating layoffs remain historically low despite slower hiring activity. Meanwhile, several large employers, including Diageo, Apple, TikTok, and other technology companies, announced targeted restructurings and workforce reductions focused on efficiency rather than broad economic weakness. At the same time, productivity gains and AI-driven operational improvements are enabling companies to do more with existing workforces, reducing pressure for large-scale hiring.

The result is a labor market where top talent remains selective, employee movement remains subdued, and organizations are increasingly focused on productivity, targeted hiring, and workforce optimization rather than broad expansion.

Impact for Nike & Nike Recruiting

For Nike, the current market presents both opportunity and challenge. While restructuring activity across retail, consumer goods, and technology sectors may create new talent pools, highly skilled professionals remain difficult to attract because fewer workers are voluntarily changing jobs. Nike's recruiting teams should expect longer hiring cycles, increased candidate selectivity, and continued pressure on compensation for specialized talent.

Success in this environment will depend less on simply identifying talent and more on persuading talent to move. Employer brand, purpose, career growth, innovation opportunities, and long-term stability remain critical differentiators. As the labor market continues its "Great Stay" phase, proactive talent pipelining, strategic workforce planning, and internal mobility will remain essential components of Nike's talent strategy. Organizations that build relationships before talent enters the market will have a meaningful competitive advantage in securing the skills needed to drive future growth.

AI Isn't Replacing Cybersecurity Talent. It's Redefining It

If you’re a recruiter, the simplest way to think about what’s happening in cybersecurity is this: AI isn’t replacing security talent, but it is changing what great security talent looks like.

Companies still need professionals with strong cybersecurity fundamentals, but they’re increasingly hiring for AI fluency, adaptability, and judgment. As AI takes on more routine work like alert triage, log analysis, and vulnerability prioritization, security professionals are spending more time validating AI outputs, managing risk, and making critical decisions.

At the same time, AI adoption is creating entirely new security challenges. As organizations deploy AI tools across recruiting, HR, product teams, and other business functions, they introduce new risks around data exposure, governance, compliance, and oversight. Security leaders are taking notice, with 92% expressing concern about the security implications of AI agents in the workforce.

One trend recruiters should pay attention to is that cybersecurity job requirements are evolving faster than traditional job descriptions. Technical skills still matter, but employers increasingly want candidates who can work effectively in AI-enabled environments and apply sound judgment when technology falls short. The shift is already visible in the market.

Earlier this year, Project Glasswing, a cybersecurity initiative led by Anthropic and supported by companies including Microsoft, AWS, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Google, NVIDIA, and Palo Alto Networks, demonstrated how advanced AI models such as Claude Mythos can identify software vulnerabilities at a scale and speed previously reserved for elite security researchers. As AI becomes more capable, organizations will need security professionals who can validate AI findings, understand governance implications, and make informed risk decisions.

           W

hat This Means for Nike Recruiting

For Nike recruiters, this is a reminder that future-ready cybersecurity talent may not always look like traditional cybersecurity talent. Hiring managers will likely place greater value on learning agility, AI awareness, governance knowledge, and business acumen alongside technical expertise.

As Nike continues adopting AI across the enterprise, the ability to identify talent that can securely enable innovation, not just protect systems, could become a meaningful competitive advantage. The best candidates will be those who know how to work with AI, challenge AI, and make good decisions when AI gets it wrong.

Sportswear Earnings Analysis: Good Results Aren't Good Enough Anymore

The latest sportswear earnings season delivered a surprising message: growth alone isn't enough to satisfy investors. Adidas, On, and Under Armour all reported narratives that management teams would characterize as progress. Yet investors collectively erased billions in market value as questions mounted around profitability, demand quality, and whether recent momentum can survive increasingly difficult comparisons. Meanwhile, Amer Sports continues to emerge as one of the few companies giving investors exactly what they want: accelerating growth, margin expansion, and upward guidance revisions.

Adidas: A Sales Beat That Exposed Bigger Questions

At first glance, Adidas delivered the quarter investors were asking for. Revenue grew 14%, the company raised its full-year sales outlook, and World Cup-related demand provided a meaningful lift across key categories.

The market's reaction suggests investors are becoming skeptical that Adidas can maintain its current pace once World Cup excitement fades. More concerning, Adidas had to spend heavily to generate the growth. Marketing expenses surged, causing operating profit to miss expectations, and investors appeared unconvinced that the returns justified the investment.

Put differently: Adidas proved it can create demand during one of the biggest sporting events on

earth. What it didn't prove is whether that demand remains as strong six months later. For a company still trying to build momentum beyond the aging Samba and Gazelle franchises, that's a legitimate concern. Investors aren't questioning whether Adidas is improving. They're questioning whether the improvement is durable.

Under Armour: The Turnaround Is Working. The Consumer Isn't Cooperating.

Under Armour's earnings highlight the central challenge in its multi-year turnaround: the business is becoming healthier while simultaneously becoming smaller. Margins improved dramatically, inventory is cleaner, operating income rebounded, and management continues to execute against its premiumization strategy.

Unfortunately, consumers continue to vote with their wallets.

Revenue declined again, North America remains challenged, and management reduced full-year expectations after previously forecasting more modest declines. Growth markets that were once expected to offset North American weakness are also showing signs of slowing. At some point, investors stop rewarding cost cutting and start demanding evidence that consumers actually want more of the product. The reality is that Under Armour now faces a much tougher competitive environment than it did during its previous growth cycle. Nike remains dominant, Adidas is resurgent, On is winning premium runners, and emerging brands continue taking share in performance and lifestyle categories. The brand may be healthier than it was 18 months ago. It is not yet clear that it is more relevant.

            Investor verdict:

Turnaround progress acknowledged. Sustainable demand growth remains unproven.

No company demonstrates the "what have you done for me lately?" nature of growth investing better than On. The Swiss challenger posted another exceptional quarter: record revenue, 21%+ growth, 65% gross margins, accelerating DTC performance, and strong momentum across Asia and Europe. By almost any operating measure, the quarter was a success.

The stock still fell nearly 20%.

Why? Because investors appear increasingly worried that On's explosive growth story is beginning to mature. Wholesale growth slowed significantly, North American channels remain promotional, and management openly acknowledged intentionally restricting shipments to avoid inventory buildup. While strategically disciplined, this also signals that demand is no longer effortlessly outpacing supply in every channel.

What investors heard was: growth remains strong, but it may not stay extraordinary. The bigger concern is valuation. High-growth brands get valued for perfection. Once investors begin debating whether growth should be 20%, 25%, or 30% instead of 40%+, the multiple often compresses faster than the business itself. On remains one of the strongest brands in sportswear today. But Wall Street is no longer pricing it like an insurgent startup. It's starting to price it like a real company facing real growth limits.

           Investor verdict:

Solid Earnings. Expectations got ahead of reality.

Amer Sports: The Company Everyone Else Wishes They Looked Like

While competitors spent earnings calls explaining volatility, channel challenges, or macroeconomic uncertainty, Amer Sports delivered a refreshingly simple story: everything is working. Revenue grew 32%. Arc'teryx continues to outperform. Salomon is accelerating. Wilson remains strong. Every region delivered double-digit growth. Direct-to-consumer sales now account for more than half of company revenue, and management raised full-year guidance.

The critical difference is that Amer isn't relying on a single hero franchise, a major sporting event, or a restructuring program to explain performance. Growth is broad-based, that's exactly what investors are rewarding in today's market.

The market's message this quarter was brutally simple:

           •	Adidas must prove growth survives beyond World Cup-fueled demand.

           •	Amer Sports is one of the few companies currently winning all three arguments.

Sportswear has largely moved past the inventory crisis that dominated recent years. The new debate is harder. Investors aren't asking who can grow. They're asking whose growth is real, whose growth is rented, and whose best days may already be reflected in the stock price.

The AI Boomerang Effect: Why Companies Are Rehiring After Over-Automation

Just a few years ago, many organizations believed generative AI would dramatically reduce the need for human workers. Customer service teams were downsized, administrative roles were automated, and some companies openly promoted AI as a replacement for large portions of their workforce. Today, a growing number of those same companies are reversing course.

The trend has become known as the "AI boomerang effect": companies discover that while AI excels at handling repetitive tasks, it often struggles with judgment, relationship management, complex problem-solving, and navigating ambiguity. As a result, organizations are rehiring employees, often at higher costs than if they had retained them in the first place. One of the most cited examples is Klarna, which previously touted its AI chatbot as being capable of performing the work of hundreds of customer service agents. After experiencing declines in service quality, the company acknowledged that human support remained critical for nuanced customer interactions and began recruiting customer service talent again.

Other organizations have faced similar realities. According to CNBC, Ford has reportedly rehired experienced engineers after automated systems struggled to identify and resolve certain quality issues. Likewise, Commonwealth Bank of Australia reversed customer service cuts after AI voice systems failed to deliver the expected customer experience. IBM, despite aggressively adopting AI, has expanded entry-level hiring in areas requiring human judgment, customer interaction, and oversight of AI systems.

The lesson is not that AI has failed. Rather, companies are learning that AI is often most effective when paired with human expertise, not positioned as a wholesale replacement for it. Routine work can be automated, but critical thinking, creativity, empathy, and relationship-building remain difficult to replicate. Many businesses are now moving toward hybrid workforce models, where AI handles volume and efficiency while employees focus on exceptions, strategic decisions, and customer relationships.

Research suggests this rebalancing may continue. Fast Company reported that many hiring

managers who eliminated roles because of AI later needed to refill those same positions, while analysts predict that organizations that over-automated customer-facing functions will increasingly restore human involvement under redesigned job structures.

If you're a recruiter, the easiest way to think about today's labor market is this: the job market is still healthy, but it's definitely not as active as it was a few years ago.The U.S. economy continues to grow, helped largely by business investment, especially in technology and AI. At the same time, inflation remains higher than many economists would like, and consumers are being a bit more cautious with spending.

From a hiring perspective, companies are still adding jobs and there are still millions of open positions across the country. Unemployment remains relatively low at around 4.2%, which means most people who want a job already have one. However, hiring has slowed compared to earlier years, and companies are being more selective with where they add headcount.

One trend recruiters should pay attention to is that

fewer employees are voluntarily leaving their jobs.

Many workers are choosing to stay put because of economic uncertainty. That means fewer experienced candidates are naturally entering the market, which can make sourcing tougher for specialized roles. Layoffs have increased slightly in some sectors but remain far below levels typically associated with a recession.

The overall hiring environment feels less competitive than it did in 2021-2023, but attracting high-quality talent is still not easy. Candidates are moving more cautiously, taking longer to make decisions, and placing greater importance on compensation, stability, flexibility, and long-term career growth.

For Nike recruiters, this is probably the most balanced talent market we've seen in several years. Hiring isn't as difficult as it was during the peak talent crunch, but candidates are also not flooding the market. Many strong performers are staying with their current employers and need a compelling reason to make a move. Recruiters may see longer response times, more candidate hesitation, and increased questions about career growth, and leadership quality. Nike's brand remains a major advantage, but winning top talent will increasingly depend on clearly communicating impact, development opportunities, and long-

You can keep it simple—just adjust a job title and location—or go deeper by attaching a job description or layering in required skills. Either way, the output stays consistent, relevant, and actionable.

The goal is straightforward: reduce the lift of getting started.

Instead of building prompts from scratch, recruiters can use pre-built inputs that align to their space and generate insights faster.

           What this Means for Recruiters

With consistent, structured outputs, recruiters can:

Identify trade-offs before the search gets difficult

Spend more time on candidate engagement, not setup

It shifts time away from “figuring it out” and toward “acting on it.” A big thank you to Mary Landwer and Megan Tolliver, along with our Firstline+ partners, for helping test and refine these tools. More is coming, keep an eye on calendars for expanded trainings and supplemental materials to help deploy insights in branded templates.

At its best, AI should make us sharper, faster, and more connected to the work that matters. These agents are a step in that direction. Less time building the plan, and more time finding the right talent.

By bringing these insights together in one place, Our new ResearchVerse removes friction from how teams access and use external data. The result is faster alignment, clearer tradeoffs, and more consistent decision-making. External insight is no longer just something pulled in when needed, it's a standing input into how hiring and workforce decisions get made at NIKE.

The Window to Win Starts Before the World Agrees

Victor Wembanyama just dropped 41 and 24 on a Conference Finals stage—and somehow, it still feels like we’re early. Because this isn’t just a breakout. It’s a handoff.

For two decades, LeBron didn’t just dominate the game—he was the game. A Nike athlete who reset the standard for performance, longevity, and global impact. You don’t replace that. You transition through it. And transitions are messy. They overlap. They show up before anyone’s ready to call them.

That’s Wembanyama. Same Swoosh. Completely different blueprint. A profile the league hasn’t really seen—moving at a speed the market is still trying to process. This is where the edge lives. Not when the next face is obvious. But during the overlap—when one era is still producing, and the next one is already compounding.

What This Has to Do With Talent

The talent market works the same way. The best candidates don’t show up as consensus picks on Day 1. If they did, everyone would have them—and we wouldn’t call that an advantage.

Instead, they show up as:

            Non-linear profiles

“Doesn’t quite match the spec” backgrounds

Talent clusters forming in places the market hasn’t fully priced yet

Leaders operating one level below where they’ll eventually land

In other words: they look different before they look obvious. By the time a candidate becomes the “Wemby of the market,” they’re not a sourcing win—they’re a timing miss.

What the Best Teams Do Differently

High-performing talent orgs don’t just track who’s good. They track when someone is about to become undeniable.

That shows up in a few ways:

Mapping emerging talent pools before competitors anchor on them

Building early relationships with “next-level” leaders (not just current-title matches)

Reading market signals (org shifts, investments, capability builds) before they hit headlines

Hiring for trajectory and system fit—not just experience

It’s less “find the best VP”. More “find the person who will be the VP in 12–24 months”

Current Signal: India & Capability Build-Outs

You’re already seeing this play out in real time. As companies (including Nike) invest more heavily in India—especially across tech, and product—the talent market is in that overlap phase right now Not fully saturated or fully obvious, but moving fast.

           The opportunity:

Spot talent coming out of high-growth org layers (not just the top seat)

Build relationships before the role, not after the req opens

Because once the market fully calibrates, it compresses:

            Timelines get tighter

            Compensation spikes

            Differentiation disappears

The Point We Want to Make

In sport—and in talent—the advantage isn’t picking the best player once everyone agrees. It’s recognizing the shift while it still looks a little unfamiliar. LeBron didn’t disappear before Wemby showed up. The overlap is the signal.

And in recruiting, that window is where the real wins happen:

            Earlier conversations

            Stronger conviction

            Better long-term hires

By the time it’s obvious, it’s already expensive. By the time it’s consensus, it’s already competitive. The job isn’t to chase the market. It’s to move just before it.

Win the Fanbase, Win the Game: 2026 Talent Tactics

The 2026 recruitment market is noticing a shift from volume hiring to elite precision play. Sourcing for candidates is no longer a standard numbers game; it is intentional high stakes plays where top talent calls the shots. To secure this elite talent (let’s call them MVP’s), modern organizations have pivoted away from traditional plays and focus heavily on candidate experience, data analytics, and airtight backend operations. If hiring process lags, these MVPs will switch teams before the first whistle.

The winning 2026 strategic playbook breaks down into three key pillars

           :

            The Premier Fan Experience:

Treat every applicant like a franchise player with hyper-personalized communication and clear, predictable timelines. A positive journey builds a lasting fanbase, turning even rejected candidates into vocal ambassadors for the brand.

            Advanced Scouting Analytics:

Less reliance on gut instinct on draft day. By integrating direct feedback loops with Applicant Tracking System (ATS) data, teams can spot exactly where candidates drop out of the funnel.

            Standardizing the Drills

: Automate administrative tracking to give recruiters time to focus on strategic engagement. Implementing uniform interview scorecards removes scouting bias and levels the playing field for all candidates.

            W

hat This Means For Nike: Do the Right Thing

Every MVP we interact with has the potential to become a teammate and is very likely to be a current consumer. The company can benefit from an elite candidate experience in several ways, such as future hiring, improved market reputation, strengthened business network, and repeat customer business.

To protect the swoosh and maintain a dominant market lead, Talent Acquisition should refine its recruitment ground game:

            Optimize Funnel Defense:

Cross-reference candidate satisfaction data to identify where premium talent exists in the pipeline.

            Standardize Training Camp:

Introduce fixed evaluation guidelines to shorten time-to-hire and ensure absolute fairness and consistency.

The World Cup Is Already a DTC Game (and Yes, It Started Early)

The 2026 FIFA World Cup hasn’t kicked off yet—but the DTC arms race is already in full sprint. Because of course it is.

A recent Campaign US roundup makes the quiet part loud: brands aren’t waiting for opening whistle hype. They’re spending early to lock in attention, build habits, and pull fans into owned environments before matchday chaos turns every feed into noise. And while adidas is getting the official‑partner shine, the more interesting signal is broader: World Cup success is being engineered around direct fan systems, not just big ads.

What’s Actually Happening (Beyond “Big Ad Go Brrr”)

The Campaign US piece highlights early activations from adidas, Coca‑Cola, Samsung, Lenovo, and others. The common thread isn’t brand love—it’s control.

           Brands are:

Launching long‑form storytelling early (claim mindshare before the buying window opens)

Anchoring campaigns to owned platforms (apps, memberships, loyalty ecosystems)

Designing World Cup moments that route fans directly into DTC touchpoints, not off to wholesale

This is less “big logo, big moment” and more “cool story—now log in.”

The World Cup DTC Landscape (adidas, Puma… and Coca‑Cola)

adidas is playing the obvious hand: global, culture‑heavy creative that ultimately drives traffic into adidas‑controlled ecosystems where drops, kits, and membership conversion. The ad is the trailer. The checkout is the movie. Puma is playing narrower but sharper—owning specific football identities and regions (notably Africa), then monetizing belonging. Less pageantry, more this is ours.

And then there’s Coca‑Cola, quietly running one of the most disciplined DTC plays in the entire tournament.

Coke isn’t selling kits. It’s selling rituals—and turning them into repeatable digital behavior:

             A centralized

The Future Talent Landscape: The Great Mismatch

Think of the next 15 years of the U.S. labor market less like a rebuilding season and more like a position-mismatch problem.

According to Indeed Hiring Lab, the biggest challenge ahead isn’t a lack of players (workers) or open spots (jobs), but the widening gap between who’s on the roster and where the game is being played. Demographics are the main force moving the field: accelerated retirements, an aging workforce, and slower immigration are projected to shrink the labor force by nearly 6 million workers by 2032, before any meaningful rebound.

AI will certainly change how the game is played—but it won’t fix the imbalance. Its biggest impact is expected in higher-wage, white-collar sectors that already attract plenty of talent, while roles facing the sharpest shortages (healthcare, manufacturing, construction, government) are the least “AI-substitutable.” The result is a tough paradox: rising structural unemployment at the same time as unfilled roles in critical sectors.

The authors argue this isn’t a short-term slump or a market cycle that will self-correct. It’s a structural challenge that requires a new playbook—focused on labor reallocation, not job creation. Upskilling, faster and more flexible credentials, and better job matching are the drills that matter most. Teams that invest early in talent mobility and skill development will be far better positioned as the mismatch widens.

Why This Matters for Nike Talent & Recruiting

For Nike, this research is a reminder that winning the talent game won’t come from chasing the same free agents as everyone else. As a business with a wide range of role types—corporate, digital, product, supply chain, and operational—Nike is likely to experience both talent surpluses and shortages at the same time. The competitive edge will come from developing internal talent pipelines, spotting transferable skills, and making lateral moves feel less like changing sports mid-career and more like switching positions on the same team.

For recruiters and talent management professionals, the takeaway is clear: skills-based hiring, internal mobility, and AI-enabled matching are no longer “nice to haves.” They’re core fundamentals. AI can help with scouting and play-calling, but it won’t carry the team by itself. Organizations that deliberately lower friction—through clearer job architectures, faster reskilling, and broader definitions of “qualified”—will stay ahead of the labor-market curve. In the next decade, the winners won’t just hire better; they’ll move talent better.
